After Punta Gorda I decided to head back north to the undesirable Dangriga where I could leave Buzz with a nice lady who owned a small Hotel while I went out to the tiny 5 acre island named Tobacco Caye. Its little cabins right on the beach ($35 US/night including 3 meals/day) and 'snokelling right out your door' lifestyle sounded very inviting, and it wasn't expensive so I thought I'd go for a couple of days. Unfortunately, the weather continued to be windy and rainy which churned up the water so that it wasn't possible to go snokelling or even be out on the island, and the cabins were actually old shacks with gaps between the unpainted floorboards that howled in the wind while I looked at the water beneath me, so I returned to my beloved Dangriga the next day where I waited 2 more days for the rain to let up a little. I did however meet two great Canadian couples from the Calgary area who had rented a beautiful catamaran and crew to sail between the small islands for a couple of weeks. We sat in the open air, palm roofed bar on Gilligan's Island and swapped stories of snow, politics and tropical fish over a few gifted drinks for good luck on my journey - thanks guys.
BTW: It's interesting to notice that many Belizeans still address people with a title followed by their first name, such as; Ms. Betty or Mr. Fred.
I'd heard that the Belize Zoo was worth seeing, and since it wasn't that far out of my way I decided to drop in and have a look before I left the country. And even though it was raining, I still managed to see quite a few animals - I guess they're used to it.
Here's a few things I've noticed about Belize. Somedays the Internet just doesn't work - anywhere. You just have to wait until the next day, or the next, eventually it will start working again, promise. I've had problems getting cash from banks, both from ATMs and in person with all my cards and passport.
